  Fishing

Catches 2007 - 2006 - 2005

Fishing for trout and salmon is hugely important to our local economy and is justified by the fact that the river Tweed is the most productive river in Europe for salmon angling. All of the salmon fishing is privately owned (and most of the trout fishing) and is normally accessed directly through the owners, their agents or clubs or syndicates who lease the fishing. There is free fishing for brown trout and grayling from 'The Cobby' in Kelso.

Fishing Availability

Salmon, trout and grayling fishing on many beats can be arranged via Fishtweed. Their web site contains much valuable information about the river and is a useful resource. We have access to a number of beats that do not operate via Fishtweed and can often arrange fishing direct with the owners.

Guiding and Tuition

Locally operated Tweedguide offer a comprehensive package of guiding and tuition in the area. They also provide tackle if required.

Eoin Fairgreive (www.speycast.co.uk) is a superb casting instructor, consultant for Loop Tackle and guides parties of anglers to exotic destinations such as Argentina.

Fishing Tackle

Tackle is readily available from Tweedside Tackle and Forrests in Kelso.  Borders Gun Room in St Boswell's has a comprehensive tackle supply despite the name. Tweedside Tackle also hire fishing tackle.

Flood Jan 8th 2005

The largest flood for more than a year is coming down the Tweed at present and may now be reaching it's peak at Kelso (11.00am). The following river level data are taken from the Fishtweed web site.

Pictures of the flood are a little further down the page.

The road to St Boswells via Maxton is closed. Water is over the road by the showground. Water is also in the hut at the Junction pool and the boats have been moved onto the point to point course for safety.

Kelso cauld (weir) has been flattened by the flood. This picture looks along the cauld. The promontory in the river is 'The Putt' which is normally about 8 feet above river level.
Looking along 'The Cobby' riverside park from our windows. The park is completely flooded as are some of the gardens of houses a few hundred yards upriver.
The island by the junction pool  ('The Anna') is completely flooded. From here it appears the the boatman from Lower Floors fishings has water in his basement - Ian lives in the cottage by Teviot bridge.
